We may see dengue outbreaks in Europe as temperatures rise

The tropical disease is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus transmitted to humans through bites from infected mosquitos that is not usually serious.

As climate change continues to worsen, countries are now developing the warm and wet conditions in which mosquitos thrive, bringing the virus further afield. Experts are working to monitor these new cases of dengue to further understand its spread. “Surveillance and reporting mechanisms are important in ensuring we have an accurate understanding of dengue spread.”Here's everything to know about dengue fever ahead of the summer holidays, as explained by Dr Babak Ashrafi of Asda Online Doctor.

One important thing to know about the infection is “you cannot contract dengue from another person”, Ashrafi said. “Most cases of dengue fever are mild and will pass of their own accord,” Ashrafi said. “In rare circumstances, a person with dengue may find that their symptoms get worse after a few days, so remain vigilant if you or someone you’re travelling with has been bitten, as this may require hospital treatment.

He continued: “You can also take over-the-counter treatments like paracetamol to bring down your fever and minimise any pain or discomfort. Avoid anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, as these can cause side effects when infected with dengue.”How can you protect yourself from dengue? Ashrafi said preventing bites is key and recommends using the same measures “as you would any other condition spread by mosquitoes”.
