Doctor pens heartfelt book about mental fortitude in disability

Buthelezi derives her unrelenting passion for saving lives from her older sister, Thabisile Buthelezi, whose dream from a tender age was to become a doctor until she was involved in a car crash on her way to buy bread at a spaza shop in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. She was left paralysed and suffered brain injuries.Fortitude is a book that delves into the personal experiences of a doctor whose sister was left with a disability after a pedestrian accident.

“She was an avid reader. She knew many things and stood by her choices. Once her mind is fixed on something, you know she won't let it go until it's done. I know she would've been a leading medical doctor, without a doubt, had she not experienced that terrible accident.” In 2012, Buthelezi had to forge through the grief of losing her mother to diabetes and hypertension exacerbated by pneumonia and hospital-acquired infections. It was hard for me to go back home after her death. At some point, I couldn't even look at her pictures. It took me years to regain the strength and courage to visit home in Soshanguve. In 2018, I visited home. I couldn’t hold my tears back when I saw my father in pain and distress. He struggled to cope with the loss of his wife.
