San Antonio elected officials acknowledged years ago that there was a gender pay gap among city workers. The latest salary database released by the city doesn't show much of an improvement.Former City Manager Sheryl Sculley tapped Lori Houston for a promotion when Houston’s child was less than a year old.
The differences show just how much the police and fire departments shift the pay narrative at the city and how traditional gender roles at work still factor into the city’s workforce. Overall, 65 percent of the city’s workforce is made up of civilians — not uniformed police and fire employees — according to data provided by Frieda.
Every single job title containing the word secretary was a woman: 19 executive secretaries, 17 senior executive secretaries and six legal secretaries. “You don’t have to dig that deep,” she said. “You don’t have to look at an employee’s folder to look at the top 10 paid positions and see there are only three women in the top 10.”
Ten jobs were pulled for further scrutiny because of a gender pay gap. The report noted a $3,700 gap among project managers and a $7,300 gap among crime intelligence senior analysts.
