Do this on a winter visit to Stellenbosch
Experience the unique charm of this historic town while feasting on the most delicious fare and touring through the wine landscape, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of winter.You get so used to doing the same thing over and over again in your town or neighbourhood – jogging the same footpath, cycling the same single track, eating the same dish at your favourite restaurant – that it’s good to be a tourist on your own turf every once in a while.
An expert guide makes any new experience that much more enjoyable and educational – no matter if you’re exploring nature or a historic town centre. I thought I knew all the jeep and single-track bike routes in and around the town, until I climbed Botmaskop with Luyanda Tobigunya and explored the Banhoek Valley on a recent Thursday morning.
Luyanda is a telling example of this. On our bike ride through town and up the mountain, he calmly rode at my pace, pointing out sights and giving advice on how to ride certain tracks when I asked. He was born in the old Transkei but grew up in Kayamandi. There he learned to ride a friend’s BMX bike before he grabbed the chance to join the Fairtree team. Not only did he win the Origins of Trails, but also the Exxaro titles in both the Cape Epic and Wines to Whales.
