Starmer's party isn’t going to lose the election because of a made-up figure most normal people haven’t heard of

Starmer's party isn’t going to lose the election because of a made-up figure most normal people haven’t heard ofThere has been a weirdness amongst Labour folk in recent weeks. Even more so than usual. At gatherings of the clan there’s been a distinct “don’t mention the war” vibe –

Being honest about the fact that there isn’t the money to embark on a huge project before you start it is painful but honest. And something which many people can relate to. I desperately wanted to do some work in my house when I moved two-and-a-half years ago. I saved the money but then inflation hit, costs have rocketed, and I can’t simply afford to do what I originally wanted.

Labour of course can hit back with Truss etc, but the party has the scars on its back for being seen as flaky on the economy. Alistair Darling and Ed Balls were not exactly Marxists in the 2010 and 2015 elections, and they were attacked for crashing the economy very successfully by the Tories. Labour’s theatrical shadow Budget in 1992, designed to help them look like a government in waiting, didn’t help the party win and many veterans still shiver at the thought of it.

I don’t think people think Starmer is dishonest, but if it looks like they will back off everything out of fear of the Tories, then that risks looking weak, which is almost worse in politics.
