Xylazine has been added to the human drug supply, creating a new chapter in America’s fatal overdose crisis.

Xylazine has no purpose outside veterinary medicine and wasn’t on the “schedule” of controlled drugs with potential for human addiction and abuse. That meant drug dealers caught with xylazine didn’t face the penalties that normally apply to controlled substances.putting it among drugs such as codeine, ketamine and anabolic steroids.
That’s because, despite its importance with a narrow group of animals, xylazine is only a $4 million a year drug in a $7 billion annual veterinary drug market, with only two manufacturers in the United States, according to Croushore. An officer with the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, Croushore says the companies made it known it’s not worth it for them to distribute xylazine in states that have unusual regulations.
As before, licensed veterinarians can obtain xylazine, and farmers can obtain it with a prescription from a veterinarian. Still, he believes “the bulk chemical could be purchased by someone if they knew what they were doing.”
