Disney+ isn’t just about Star Wars, Marvel and all beloved animated classics. There are some much less well-known but lovingly restored treats to be found there, too
The Black HoleIts tone is weird to say the least, as it combines elements aimed squarely at children with an increasingly creepy and complex storyline.
Some of the dialogue and acting feels stilted and cringy, some of the action is hilariously amateurish, the score often feels like it’s accidentally been ported over from a completely different film, and the attempts at humour feel almost surreally misplaced. However, the longer the film goes on, the more unsettling the tension becomes between the film’s child-like simplicity, sometimes surreal visuals, strange sound design and increasingly metaphysical contemplations. All leading to a climax that delivers actual, honest to goodness depictions of heaven and hell. Blimey.’s inherent creepiness was by any means intentionally created. But the result is certainly one of cult cinema’s more happy accidents.
