Variety's original review for the short Disney movie suggested that parents might not want to bring their children, though it did concede that a scene wherein "one skeleton plays the spine of another in xylophone fashion" was a "peak.
The Skeleton Dance was also revolutionary in a different way. Synchronized audio and animation was a new technique at the time, and the horror short perfected it. Composer Carl Stalling came up with a click track system, using the frames of the cartoon to form a beat that musicians could follow. The first of Disney's Silly Symphonies series, The Skeleton Dance paved the way for music and animation to work together.
