Rats have swarmed the Northam Estate in Southampton with residents claiming they have made more than 100 burrows. Mark Crosby, 50, has had to fork out after they broke his Ford Focus.

The 50-year-old has even had to install a £40 'rat alarm' on the Ford Focus to make sure the pests don't return. Advertisement He said: 'I have had to pay out 600 quid to get my car electrics done because they chewed through all my wires.They are in and out of the bins, they're just all over the place.'They're not scared of us anymore, there's that many of them, they're not scared of humans.

A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said: 'Our Pest Control, Housing and Waste teams have been working in partnership over the last few years to tackle the issue of rats on the Northam Estate'
