Disgruntled residents laid bare the horror they faced in the hopes of getting government to restore peace in the township.
Residents argued that ministers, MECs and law enforcement officials have failed poor communities like Diepsloot, leaving residents with no choice but to defend themselves against undocumented foreign nationals. In stark contrast, Mweli explained the grave situation facing Diepsloot residents and her ordeal with criminals who broke into her home.It is painful having your tiny house broken into every other night while you constantly live in fear. They have broken into several homes, raped women, stolen and killed.
Mweli added: “Our government is putting the wellbeing of foreign nationals ahead of the lives of South Africans. Now, when we fight for our community, we are labelled as violent and xenophobic. We are not xenophobic.”
