A disgraced former police officer and her boyfriend have been jailed for a years-long scam where they sold sickly kittens to unsuspecting families. Amy Byrne was fired from the force in January after a misconduct investigation.

Trading Standards, the RSPCA and the police all received numerous complaints about Byrne and Angell dating back as far as 2015. An investigation was launched and their home in Bexleyheath, south east London, was searched in August 2021.There were 17 kittens at their house and a vet judged that six of them were suffering. The six were confiscated and one died a short time later.

During the raid the pair tried to throw away their mobile phones. Angell jumped out a window and threw his phone into a garden while Byrne carried out a factory reset of hers. But Angell's phone was found and officers found hundreds of pictures of kittens, enquiries about adverts and complaints from people reporting their kittens were sick.

In one message Angell bragged that he bought two kittens for £75 then sold them on for £600 each the next week.Ms Stevens said analysis by the RSPCA showed the couple intended to make a gain of £278,870.
