Vera Frinton says its only for those with deep pockets and an endless love of train
Having been on Kenyan safaris, road trips in South Africa, and cruises along the east coast of the continent, we were ready to see the less visited Africa – in comfort.
The next morning we joined the remainder of the total 61 passengers, most of whom were European, at the equally lovely Serena Hotel. Cars contain up to four compartments of Royal, Deluxe, or Pullman suites. Every suite has a functional ensuite bathroom. We had a Deluxe suite with the double bed configured lengthways. Storage space is limited but our excellent attendant was able to help us tuck things away. A small mini-bar holds cold drinks and equipment for bedtime tea. There is little available floor space, so thoughts of exercising or even stretching had to be abandoned or accomplished on the bed.
Rovos’ desire to maintain the aura of “travel in a bygone era” meant no available Wi-Fi, TV or radio. The library had a few magazines, and some books left by previous travellers, but unfortunately no reference materials on Africa. Entertainment was limited to a series of weathered, sometimes amusing, lectures by the on-board historian.
In lieu we visited a coffee plantation near Mbeya. This included a pleasant lunch accompanied by the train’s well supplied bar. The latter followed us also on an excursion to Chisimba Falls in Zambia a couple of days later.
