Now McKinney could do nothing, at the risk of the region missing a rare economic opportunity that has regional implications. Dallas Love Field is mostly land and gate constrained, and Southwest Airlines is barred from operating at other airports within 80 miles of Love Field without giving up gates at Love Field until 2025.
Combined with current operations limitations at DFW International Airport set by the Federal Aviation Administration, some experts predict that both airports could be at capacity by 2038, if not sooner, although others say DFW could add terminals and gates. In a recent interview withas much. “Because Love Field is capped, the options are to look at other places that you could serve in the metroplex. Obviously, DFW could be one of those; other airports can be available as well.
DFW Airport and Love Field stimulated tourism, corporate relocation and related economic activity. They have proved over time to be among the greatest investments our region has made. A new commercial passenger service terminal in McKinney would provide similar benefits.
This month’s “no” vote indicates that community buy-in isn’t there in McKinney, or in nearby Fairview and Lucas, where many residents opposed the airport. All this signals to us that McKinney leaders must take additional steps to allay concerns over the price tag and effect on surrounding communities.
