Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus may well have changed his selection thinking for the tour to Argentina after the latest results.
Last Saturday, the Springboks claimed a crucial win over the All Blacks to establish an eight-point buffer at the top of the Rugby Championship log ahead of back-to-back Tests against Argentina to finish the competition.
It was the most points the Wallabies have conceded in the history of Test rugby and their second heaviest defeat of all time, falling just short of the record of 45 points set in 2008 when they were beaten 53-8 by South Africa. However, it is noteworthy that several World Cup stars such as Siya Kolisi, Handre Pollard, Eben Etzebeth, Jesse Kriel and Kwagga Smith will travel as an extra insurance policy of sorts.
All in all it’s been a delicate balancing act, but there is good reason to believe that the latest performance from Argentina may have forced the Springboks into changes in their planning. “The players we decided to rest have really done their bit this season and their bodies deserve a break, so we thought the best for them would be to enjoy a break and spend time with their families before joining us in Nelspruit.
