A Canadian organization is behind an unprecedented use of modelling that has illustrated for the first time the disturbing cost of misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic
Based on the modelling, if those who believed the pandemic was a hoax or exaggerated had not delayed or refused vaccination, then by the end of that time frame, there could have been:approximately 2,800 fewer deaths;“It does seem that misinformation has become a defining issue of our age,” said Alex Himelfarb, a former clerk of the Privy Council and chair of the expert panel that produced the report, entitled “Fault Lines.
The panel used what’s known as an “agent-based” model in collaboration with a team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to “simulate” the behaviour of Canadians in 2021. The published estimates are conservative; they only account for a nine-month period during the pandemic, and don’t include other factors such as the impact of long COVID and outcomes associated with delaying surgeries and other procedures.
