The discovery in a Roman tomb of remains of a small brachycephalic or “flat-faced” dog suggest people were selectively breeding for these features even in ancient times

Flat-faced dogs like pugs and bulldogs, technically known as brachycephalic dogs, can be undeniably appealing: Their short noses, big eyes, and wrinkly expressions make them resemble eternal puppies, triggering the “oh, so cute!” response in humans.

The distinctive features of brachycephalic or “flat-faced” dogs like this pug are the result of a genetic mutation. The discovery in a Roman tomb of remains of a small brachycephalic dog suggest people were selectively breeding for these features even in ancient times.An ancient ‘best friend and companion’, was made in 2007 at the ancient necropolis of Tralleis located just outside the modern city of Aydın on Turkey’s Aegean coast.

This is only the second find of a Roman-era dog skull that has these flat-faced features—the other was discovered in Pompeii in the 18th century, and dates from theTop register: the skull and jawbone of the Tralleis dog; lower register: a comparison of the Tralleis skull with that of a modern French bulldog . The Tralleis dog is smaller and may have been roughly the size of a Pekingese.
