Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he tried to give his much-hyped rookie a “soft landing” in his debut on Monday.
Carroll joins an outfield that already includes Daulton Varsho, Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy, all of whom are left-handed and have been getting close to everyday at-bats, as well as rookie Stone Garrett, who has seen limited playing time since his promotion earlier in the month.
Carroll could see time at all three outfield spots, Lovullo said, though he won’t be in center on days Thomas starts. He said Thomas is going to remain in center on the days he plays. “He’s a tremendous athlete; he can handle a lot,” Lovullo said. “But I know he’s excelling in right field. He’s enjoying his time in right field. We don’t want to interrupt that for right now. It’ll be a discussion for everybody to have this offseason.”To commemorate Carroll’s promotion, the Diamondbacks flew in nearly all of the Double-A and Triple-A coaches to be at Chase Field for his debut.
