The numbers were included in an annual development report by city staff to the planning committee.

The new numbers were disclosed in an annual development report by City of Ottawa staff that the planning committee will receive at an Aug. 25 meeting.

Of 2021 housing starts, 29.5 per cent were for single detached houses, up from 26.4 per cent in 2020. A total of 2.3 per cent were for semi-detached homes, 27.9 per cent were for row houses and 40.3 per cent were for apartments — all slight declines. Both Gatineau and Ontario municipalities near Ottawa reported decreases in housing starts in 2021: by 11.1 per cent and 14.7 per cent, respectively.

The estimated population of the City of Ottawa was 1,032,900 in mid-2021 and 1,046,400 by the end of 2021, representing a 2.3-per-cent increase from the end of 2020. It was a smaller increase than projected, with staff reporting that Ottawa welcomed fewer immigrants than expected because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
