Walker, they point out, was a stalwart human being, a bookish former wrestler and rock of his family with no criminal record. He did not have a weapon when police shot him.
According to a 2019analyzing suicide by cop cases from the Los Angeles Police Department Mental Evaluation Unit, 89% of victims made suicidal communications during the police encounter, and 67% had a confirmed or probable mental health diagnosis, including depression. Just a quarter were armed.
Others agree that more must be done to help officers recognize suicidal individuals and respond in ways other than deadly force. Despite his refusal to speculate, Pierson, the assistant attorney general, offered a hint of the investigators’ rationale during Monday’s press conference.
