Sanctions are mandatory obligations, not optional

Russia is dominating in eastern and southern Ukraine. To date, economic sanctions have certainly not diminished its war-fighting capacity.

The Europeans have only themselves to blame for the looming energy crisis. They became too dependent on supply from Russia. Pursuing the “net zero by 2050” fantasy, they shuttered nuclear plants and coal mines in the futile hope that a transition to renewables, like solar and wind, would be their salvation. The more detached from reality they became, the more they needed supply from Russia.

Canada’s decision was lamely supported by the U.S. State Department, whose spokesperson, Ned Price, stated, “In the short term, the turbine will allow Germany and other European countries to replenish their gas reserves, increasing their energy security and resiliency and countering Russia’s efforts to weaponize energy.

That is precisely what may happen. Zelenskyy added that Canada’s action sets a dangerous precedent. “If a terrorist state can squeeze out such an exception to sanctions, what exceptions will it want tomorrow or the day after tomorrow?” he asked. Was there much debate at the cabinet table in Ottawa? Was Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland absent? Was any minister courageous enough to vote against the decision on moral grounds? The government’s decision is globally embarrassing, even more so if it proves to be futile. Was it inspired by the visit to Ottawa next month of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz?Article content
