Germany and Japan are injecting needed spine into the security posture of America’s allies. But where is Canada?
Germany’s turning point was prompted by the Biden administration’s failure to deter a weakened Russia in Ukraine. The feckless withdrawal from Afghanistan added to allied discomfort.
China fired missiles into the sea near Japan’s southern islands in August as part of a show of military force around Taiwan. In September, North Korea fired a missile into Japan’s 200-mile Exclusive Economic zone in Northwestern Japan. Coinciding with Tokyo’s announcement, North Korea fired two missiles in the direction of Japan – the latest of dozens of missile tests by Pyongyang this year.
Japan’s new security strategy was warmly greeted by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said it would “reshape the ability of our alliance to promote peace and protect the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.” Article content
