Facing byelections, opinion polls suggest Ford\u0027s government is not doing enough for Ontario. The evidence says the opposite.
In education, the Ford government is introducing a welcome focus on basic skills. Starting this fall, a new math curriculum in elementary school will tackle things like financial literacy and coding while moving away from abstract problem solving in favour of solid numbers skills. The time-tested phonics approach to reading is also coming back, along with cursive writing. Research shows that mastering handwriting develops neuromuscular, spatial and cognitive skills.
Housing is another area where the problems have been known for a long time but no one had taken decisive action. New provincial rules will speed up municipal approvals for housing and make more land available for development. There is more to the housing shortage than municipal delays, but past governments have shied away from fixing rules-heavy, anti-development approaches. That’s history now.
The willingness to challenge the conventional “wisdom” is not all down to Doug Ford. Education Minister Stephen Lecce, Health Minister Sylvia Jones, Labour Minister Monte McNaughton, Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark and Energy Minister Todd Smith have all been key players.
