While talks continue over President Biden's trillion-plus dollar policy package, Democratic voters want more action. Democratic lawmakers need more time.

over the scope of President Biden’s expansive domestic policy agenda. But their voters—both moderates and progressives—have largely rallied around the push to increase government spending and say they worry lawmakers will fail to come to an agreement.

Most of the Democratic voters interviewed said they believed that if their elected leaders didn’t act on the most ambitious legislation possible, the party risked losing congressional seats in next year’s midterm elections and the White House in 2024. “The Democrats have the majority right now, why don’t they pull the trigger?” said Andre Edmonds, a 35-year-old welder from West Palm Beach, Fla. “If they don’t get it done,is gonna be president.” Former President Trump hasn’t said whether he will run again but has indicated he is considering a 2024 bid.

This summer, the president and Democratic leaders settled on a $3.5 trillion package, saying it would be paid for by taxes and other sources of revenue and offsets. Progressive Democratic lawmakers, who typically represent safe seats and seldom worry about courting swing voters, had said anything lower meant important programs would be lost or trimmed. They have since said they were willing to negotiate. Mr. Biden has floated a roughly $2 trillion package as a compromise.

As president, Mr. Biden is at the center of a party that has shifted leftward with ambitious goals to match. He is seen as more moderate than such liberals as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders , and more progressive than Sens. Sinema and Manchin. Ms. Sinema hasn’t publicly detailed what she wants to keep in the package. Mr. Manchin has said it should be closer to $1.5 trillion.
