When Kamala Harris was the California attorney general, she found an ally — and friend — in Beau Biden.

Now, that friendship has turned into a political rivalry. Biden and Harris will return to the debate stage Wednesday, during the second Democratic debate in Detroit. In the weeks since the first debate, the two candidates have made public jabs at one another, criticizing policy proposals and previous stances.
The two became close following the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. At the time, both attorneys general were seen as rising political stars. Biden opened his own investigation into the banks, and he and Harris shared information with one another. Speculation over the vice president’s 2016 plans intensified over the weekend, after New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote that, in his final days, Beau Biden pleaded with his father to seek the presidency.Despite the pressure Beau faced in Delaware to sign the settlement agreement, Dailey Lewis, who is now the executive director of the Beau Biden Foundation, said he was not one"to roll over.
