For subscribers: Democrat Marco López promises pardons for abortion providers, women if he's elected governor
Democratic candidate for governor Marco López pledged to pardon any health care provider or woman prosecuted for performing or obtaining an abortion, an election promise made during a 20-minute television interview Thursday in which he repeatedly ripped his opponent for her absence.
López and Simons discussed some of the top issues facing Arizona, including abortion, the border and education. "First of all, it's important that we show up," López said."As I travel the state of Arizona, to the 15 counties and 22 tribes, absent repeatedly from those conversations is the Secretary of State. ... The reality is that the issues that matter most to Arizonans can only be addressed, and Democrats can only win, if you are building that coalition that will help us lead.
"Katie's out talking to Arizona voters, meeting them where they're at in their communities, and hearing directly from them about their most pressing concerns like how much groceries will cost next week or if their child will get a good education," campaign manager Nicole DeMont said.On Thursday, Hobbs' spokesperson Sarah Muench said all in-person campaign events were canceled because Hobbs has COVID-19.
“Aside from what you might hear from Kari Lake or Donald Trump, they didn't come here bringing drugs or crime," he said."They came here with an opportunity, and a spirit that their kids, my two sisters, and I, would have a great opportunity that they could never think about.” On the state's water future, López said he would work with tribes, developers and city planners to create a long-term solution that would include conservation and could include desalination. Simons, the interviewer, noted those discussions are happening now.
