Demand for the new COVID-19 booster is strong across Greater Cleveland, but interest in the flu vaccine is lagging, according to some vaccine providers. Health experts say both immunizations are important.

“We are encouraging everyone eligible to receive both vaccinations as we head into the colder months and expect activity of both viruses to increase,” the Cleveland Clinic said.

The Clinic is seeing significant interest in the updated booster vaccine, and has added additional capacity to give shots at its Hillcrest and Fairview vaccination sites. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the updated booster shot for everyone 12 and older who completed their two-dose primary series, or received a booster at least two months ago. Also, those who have recently recovered from COVID-19 are recommended to wait three months before getting a boosterEvery year, vaccine providers must calculate how much flu vaccine they’ll need. This year, they must factor in demand for the new COVID-19 booster as well.

Demand was stronger with the previous COVID-19 booster shots than it has been so far with the new booster. “However, we are at the place in the pandemic where people want to return to their usual activities and many people don’t feel the same level of urgency” to get a booster, Golembiewski said.
