Two Spring ISD graduates made their mark on Dekaney history as the school’s first-ever Black female salutatorian and valedictorian.
Spring Independent School District Rony E. CanalesDekaney High Salutatorian A’myri Phillips has her sights set on her next four years in the Golden State. The first of her siblings to attend college, Phillips said she—like many of her peers—had to overcome obstacles.
Despite the challenges they faced, Phillips said they achieved by persevering. She urged her peers to use their talents as agents of change and “to leave our mark on history.” Johnson remembers graduating from kindergarten wearing her blue cap and gown. Twelve years later, she said, not much has changed. She stood before her fellow graduates, wearing a blue cap and gown, as she delivered her speech as valedictorian of her class.
“We should take in this moment, this ceremony, this day, and cherish it,” Johnson said. “Today is a commemoration of all we’ve strived for and the hard work we’ve put in to get here. We’ve yearned for this moment, we’ve earned this moment, and we’ve definitely earned this diploma. Today is our day.”
