‘I wanted to be there forever’: Why Dejounte Murray’s mixed messages about Spurs ring true
Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray in the first half of an NBA basketball game Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, in Denver. ATLANTA — Dejounte Murray is about to walk away.
This is why it’s pointless to parse each word of impulsive social media posts and wide-ranging podcast interviews to seek out some singular, overriding sentiment Murray has about the team that drafted him as an unpolished teenager and watched him become an All-Star. They were disappointed last summer, when in the days after his trade to Atlanta, he bickered with fans on Instagram, posting that the Spurs would “be losing for the next 15 ” because of a “problem bigger than basketball.”
Wouldn’t it be understandable if, in Murray’s head, the Spurs wanted to erase this part of him? Wouldn’t it make sense if, even if they never even hinted they had concerns about their reputation, Murray looked around at Duncan and Gregg Popovich and pristine houses in the Dominion and became convinced they wanted him to change?Kyrie Irving’s talents tempted Spurs before his disastrous Celtics, Nets...
“I feel like I’ve always been a good person. Going in there and being around Pop, and the whole organization, you learn more good than bad.”That’s not so terrible, is it? Most of us should be so lucky. And instead of arguing about how much bad there actually was, it’s more helpful to remember how Murray might have needed to believe there was plenty of both.
This, as some part of Murray surely knows, is not completely accurate. He was one of the Spurs’ proudest draft-and-development success stories. He exemplified what could be accomplished with an elite work ethic in their system, and those in charge of the team would have enjoyed nothing more than to have Murray around for their next era of championship contention.Murray wanted to win, and the Spurs did too. The cold, hard truth was they just couldn’t do it together.
