Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s 100th game as GM and gaffer of Cavalry FC didn’t go quite as planned Saturday.

“It feels like déjà-vu,” said Wheeldon Jr., recalling last month’s similar effort — a 3-0 misadventure — against Ottawa. “We’re in this bad loop, and I hope I’ll wake up in a minute. It’s just a strange game.”

“We can play and pass the ball around as much as we want,” said Wheeldon Jr. “But if we don’t defend like we can, and we don’t cut them open like we can, then we don’t deserve three points.” Meanwhile, the Cavs — in second place with 41 points thanks to a 12-5-9 record — have two more matches left in the regular-season schedule to make that happen for themselves — both at home versus Valour FC on Sunday, Oct. 2 and against Pacific FC on Saturday, Oct. 8 . And both those clubs are desperately trying to track down one of the three post-season spots still up for grabs. Both are on 37 points, with Pacific holding two games in hand on both Cavalry and Valour .

“Somehow they score three goals,” Trafford said. “And 44 crosses, and we can’t score? I don’t know how many corners , and we can’t score. Normally, when you have a game like this, somebody should put one in the net. We did eventually with the penalty, but it was too little, too late. With those kind of stats, we need goals. You need to score. If you have 44 crosses, you need to convert.”

That came after Karifa Yao, a usually reliable defender for the Cavs, soft-touched a pass that was intercepted, sending Ottleti in on a rush. A couple of sharp passes later, it was knocked in the net easily by Brian Wright to make it 2-0 Ottawa. Down one, it seemed more was likely to come from dominant Cavalry, but again a counter the other way meant a goal for the visitors — this time by Malcolm Shaw.
