Her cousin, Donna Fudge, made the ribbon skirts that are sold at the store. – ContributedDEER LAKE, N.L. — Judy Fletcher has always been proud of her Mi’kmaw heritage.Her grandfather, Glode, came to Deer Lake from Nova Scotia to work in the logging industry, and her father was born in Newfoundland.

She said there are also a lot of Indigenous people in the province who are artists and crafters, but she saw that the opportunities to sell their work can be limited. After her last tenants moved out about two years ago the building sat vacant, as she didn’t want to rent it but wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do with it. Once she knew that opening a store was something she wanted to do, she just went for it.

Fudge does a lot of knitting and sewing and has taken part in sessions offered by the Millbrook First Nation in making some traditional Mi’kmaq crafts. She learned to make ribbon skirts during a session the band held in Deer Lake last year. “There are more and more people wearing them and appreciating them. Everyone seems to be wanting them.”
