The tech cold war between the U.S. and China has reached a boil—and it could end with the Chinese government being able to spy on just about everyone

Russia was able to advance its nuclear capabilities by some well-placed spies in U.S. research and development labs, and by reading a best-selling book, titled,Nobody today is publishing how-to books detailing architectural plans for the next iPhone, or uploading PDFs to Reddit which explain how to perfect a trillion-dollar communications network. But it’s true that the U.S. lags behind rival nations in protecting some of our most closely guarded industrial secrets.

While the Trump administration doesn’t usually get accolades from the left or Silicon Valley for anything, the recent banning of Huawei, the Chinese technology company, has actually been met with kudos from people across the United States. Any country that is going to operate solely on the Huawei infrastructure is going to be utterly susceptible to Chinese interference—and at the mercy of China’s leaders.

The U.S. government already takes precautions to prevent technology made by other countries from burrowing its way into our most secret institutions. At the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City, for example, people who enter certain areas of the building are not allowed to bring any form of technology inside. Cell phones, laptops, smartwatches—all are left with the building’s security team, and locked away. Similar rules apply to investigators in other divisions of the U.S.
