71 years after he was killed, a San Antonio soldier’s family can hold his medals
Pfc. Marcos H. Perez was killed in action in the Korean War in 1951, having rejected several chances to return home. He was 39, a radioman in the 15th Field Artillery Regiment. On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, presented his family with medals posthumously awarded — the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Medal.
Perez came to San Antonio at age 5, his family among thousands who fled revolutionary upheaval in Mexico, and married Victoria Martinez. They had five children, so many dependents that it took repeated tries before the Army let him enlist.
