It was sort of a response to a question I’m always asked – thatare always asked – as an Asian American woman: “Where are you from?” So I wanted to do a whole novel about the topic to understand how being a Chinese American – from the Midwest, which isn’t common in this industry – shaped my identity.
Writing the book was a way of grappling with my identity in my 20s as a Chinese American – it wasn’t something I had a long leash to explore as a kid because I just needed to survive and fit in, being one of the only Asian Americans where I grew up. Eventually having the space to explore that allowed me to write this book.
I don’t know if people from high school know about it. I’m in touch with a few people who’ve been really supportive, but outside of my circles in Brooklyn and seeing who’s tagging it on Instagram, I don’t know if the people in question have heard about it.People often say that it’s impossible to really deal with something while you’re still living in it because you are trapped by denial.
