A West Virginia man died Monday morning just hours before the remains of a mother and daughter missing for 24 years were discovered buried in the backyard of his home in Beckley, authorities said.

In the first week of April, investigators visited Webb – who was in his 80s – at Hilltop Nursing Home Center, where he confessed to killing of Susan and Natasha,reports. Webb told investigators he shot Susan, who was in the middle of a custody battle and had been living with Webb, after an argument about money missing from the home. He then killed Natasha to avoid being a suspect in her mother’s death, officials said.
Webb said after the killings, “he knew he had ruined his life forever” and “cried himself to sleep that night,” according to Hatfield. Rausa added that Webb “was on his deathbed, looking to come to Jesus at that point” when he confessed to the killings.
