'I feel terrified of starting conversations with people, so I just avoid them altogether.'

I’m hoping for some advice on how to overcome being socially awkward. I suppose I’ve always been fairly shy or maybe I’m just not pushy. Before having my kids I had a job that involved being in touch with people all the time, so I was more relaxed in social situations.

I’ve lost my confidence and I don’t know how to get it back. If I pluck up the courage to start talking to someone and they seem uninterested, I feel upset and think about it for days afterwards. Start by getting out of your car and saying hello. If someone says hello back, you can follow up with “How are you?” or “Nice to see you again” and a conversation happens naturally.

You know you’re sitting in your car because you’re nervous and shy but, to other people, it might come across as standoffish. Also, stop overanalysing everything. People aren’t thinking about you in the way you’re thinking about yourself.
