Heard on the Street: One blockbuster health-insurance deal won’t happen, but smaller players should still draw interest

But smaller players still should draw interest from potential suitors.
Humana’s disclosure may have caught some hedge funds off guard, but the rationale for such a deal still makes sense. The concentrated nature of the insurance industry means that small and midsize insurers will continue to be in demand. For the largest players, merging with each other isn’t a realistic option. Anthem’s proposed deal to buy Cigna, as well as Aetna’s planned acquisition of Humana, fell apart in 2017 over antitrust concerns.
