Deadpool's meta-awareness of everything about the fictional story he exists within, might be the result of him making up that story himself.
Deadpool is one of the most popular characters in the entire Marvel Universe, partly thanks to his meta-awareness, but that meta-awareness might be more significant than readers realize. Since the 1990s, a defining feature of wisecracking mercenary Wade "Deadpool" Wilson has been his ability to break the fourth wall. How does he do this? One fascinating explanation is given in the 2013 miniseries Deadpool Kills Deadpool, written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by Salva Espin.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In Deadpool Kills Deadpool, the mercenary finds himself facing different versions of himself from various parallel timelines of the Marvel multiverse. In a key moment, the "real" Deadpool is stabbed through the chest with a chainsaw. Thanks to Deadpool's impressive healing factor, the wound isn't fatal, and it eventually heals completely. Strangely, however, Deadpool's costume also repairs itself, leaving no rips, tears, or even blood stains.
In the years since this major reveal regarding Deadpool, author Cullen Bunn has written other Deadpool comics, which actually put forth other theories to explain Deadpool's meta-awareness. Fore example, in 2015's Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars, written by Cullen Bunn and drawn by Matteo Lolli and Matteo Buffagni, it's suggested that Deadpool knows he's in a comic book thanks to knowledge granted by a mysterious, all-knowing entity.
The full ramifications of the notion put forth in Deadpool Kills Deadpool haven't been fully explored in the years since the comic was first released. Nonetheless, the notion is there in Marvel canon for anyone who wishes to embrace it. Whether you're a fan of Deadpool in particular, or the entire wild and sometimes-contradictory Marvel Universe as a whole, you can take comfort in this one peculiar notion.
