A property deemed vacant under the empty-homes program will be taxed at a rate of three per cent of its 2022 assessed value. Most homeowners won’t pay the tax because it’s their principal residence, it’s rented out for at least half the year or because it’s eligible for an exemption. The empty homes tax was introduced in 2017 to return homes to the rental pool. A review of the program is underway and it will be looked at by city council in the spring..
