As the crucial deadline for electricity meter software updates is fast approaching, confusion has spread across social media, leaving many customers unsure of whether they need to act before Sunday, 24 November,The updates, required by the Standard Transfer Specification Association , are part of a nationwide upgrade to the KRN 2 system for prepaid electricity meters, but the requirements differ depending on whether customers are supplied by the City of Cape Town...

‘Due to some highly inaccurate and confusing reporting on certain news sites, many City customers are concerned they will not be able to recharge their prepaid meters after November,’ the City said in a statement. ‘We want to reassure customers that all meters in City areas have been updated.’ Eskom has made significant progress in the KRN2 rollout, which began in July 2023. The utility confirmed that the vast majority of meters have already been upgraded to the new system. ‘Customers experiencing issues with vending or loading units should reach out to Eskom for support,’ the company advised.

A ‘1’ indicates the meter has not yet been upgraded and needs to be recoded, while a ‘2’ confirms the upgrade has been completed.
