'Dead people were left in the street': Mexicans desperate to escape the grip of violent cartels
A displaced migrant from Guerrero who does not want to be identified shows the marks left by the ropes with used by a cartel to hold him prisoner six months ago, at the Agape shelter in Tijuana, Baja California State, Mexico. Mexican elections are due on 2 June.
The 37-year-old said that he was abducted by a criminal group called Los Tlacos in Mexico's violence-plagued southern state of Guerrero. Crime is one of the main challenges awaiting Mexico's next president as the country prepares to hold elections on 2 June. Local officials"are bought" by criminals and going to the police would be a death sentence, she said.
