Twitter\u0027s decision to brand the network as \u0022government\u002Dfunded media\u0022 is technically accurate. But it\u0027s also worrying.

It’s not that the label is inaccurate. It’s not. It’s that the wording of the moniker brings with it some unwarranted freight, as if the CBC is a modern-day version of Pravda, say, the onetime official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Poilievre certainly has every right to advocate for cutting off the flow of public funding to the network; I mean, hasn’t every radio phone-in question about gardening been asked and answered by now? There’s roughly $1.2 billion in taxpayer money that supports the CBC each year, funds that could go a long way to soothing Poilievre’s litany of other grievances. Perhaps it could help put the woke back to sleep?

Instead, though, he paints the CBC as “Trudeau propaganda, not news,” and tweets “BREAKING: CBC officially exposed as ‘government-funded media,’ as if that is actually breaking news. Breaking news would be finding someone in Canada who didn’t already know where the CBC gets most of its funding.Article content
