The department was responding to Professor Jonathan Jansen's proposal to cancel the 2020 school year entirely and promote all pupils from Grades 1 to 11.

Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the advice from Jansen was ill-conceived, irresponsible, misinformed and premature.Mhlanga explained that two days of the first school term have been missed and at the projected end of the lockdown, pupils will have missed marginally less than half of the second term.

The spokesperson said in total there are 198 days of school in one year and 23 days are expected to be lost.He stated sufficient time would be available to recover the academic year. Mhlanga said the recovery plan that will be implemented by the Department of Education takes into account the lost time and pupils who may not have had access to remote learning materials.Help protect your loved ones by sharing this officialThe NICD has another Clinician Hotline to improve #COVID19 communication and support for healthcare providers.
