The annual “Dawn at the Alamo” ceremony, hosted by the Alamo Trust in partnership with the San Antonio Living History Association to honor the sacrifice of the Alamo defenders, is considered the quintessential battle commemoration, held in the same place and on the same date and approximate hours that the 90-minute conflict unfolded at the end of a 13-day siege.
The 1836 siege and battle, coinciding with a declaration of Texas independence 150 miles to the east, was a dramatic event in the evolution of Texas, which became an independent republic after the Battle of San Jacinto six weeks later and a U.S. state in 1845. The somber annual ceremony dates to 1986 and included readings of battle accounts, period music, laying of wreaths and a musket volley. In an annual gesture of friendship and goodwill between the two nations, the Prayer of St. Francis was read in English and Spanish. Newly elected Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, whose state agency oversees the Alamo, offered remarks during the ceremony.
“This is an incredibly important event for us, as we honor those who gave their lives in defense of freedom,” said Alamo Trust Executive Director Kate Rogers. “We are honored to partner with the San Antonio Living History Association to present this meaningful ceremony and to invite the community to join us in paying tribute to the Alamo Defenders.”
