Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to underline how South Africans are being failed
March was a joyful month for me. My younger son, Graham, turned 40, while my daughter and two grandchildren celebrated their birthdays as well. What made the month extra-special was that, for the first time in more than two years, I was able to enjoy the revelries together with my wife and all three of my children. The presence of my youngest brother from Australia and a first cousin from Israel was an unexpected bonus.
It was wonderful having a house filled with the laughter of children. I played Populus Run on my mobile, ate Coco Pops for breakfast and went to bed watching Shrek rather than Bloomberg. My son, daughter, brother and cousin have all been out of the country for well over 20 years but are still African at heart. They punctuate their language with “Seffrican” slang and talk about “us and them” when it comes to arguing about rugby or cricket.
