David Pryor, the 39th governor of Arkansas who went on to serve the state for 18 years in the Senate, died Saturday at the age of 89.
David Hampton Pryor, the 39th governor of Arkansas who went on to serve the state for 18 years in the Senate and in the process established a legacy as one of the most admired, trusted and beloved political leaders in Arkansas ' history, died Saturday at the age of 89.
After three terms at the state capitol Pryor set his sights on Washington, D.C., winning a 1966 special election to succeed longtime Rep. Oren Harris. "Basically the real test of people and of men does not come when we accept our victories. It comes when we accept our defeats."After spending two years practicing law, Pryor stepped back into the political arena, mounting a bid to become Arkansas' 39th governor.
Arkansans took to his style of politics and in 1976 returned him to office with an astounding 83% of the vote. In the Senate, Pryor continued his advocacy for the elderly and cast repeated votes against the agenda of President Ronald Reagan.
