The herring fishery “war” in B.C., as referred to in a previous publication in the Tyee, began with a petition and has since devolved into a fight that pits conservationists against fishermen. This fight does nothing but create space between these two sides that blocks any opportunity for reasoned dialogue or conversation. Ian Gill’s article last month only serves to bolster this narrative.

Calvin Siider, the B.C. herring fisherman featured in Gill’s piece, has three daughters, two of which are active young fish harvester. Cailyn, his middle child, speaks passionately about the love and respect she has learned from her father and the community knowledge that has been passed through years of storytelling. “What I’ve inherited from my family and community is compassion, empathy, and the deepest love and respect for our communities and everyone in them.

Helen Beans, a fisherwoman from Alert Bay, completed her first season of herring this year. Speaking of her experience in the lead-up to the season, she says, “I was made to feel like a monster. Everyone on Hornby felt so strongly about the issue, but they didn’t ask us about our experience. I feel very frustrated.”

Commercial herring fishermen risk it all every season. We don’t have extra cash or spare time to counter the incredibly well-organized and funded campaign led by conservation organizations. However, what we do have is far more valuable. We have our stories and our immense wealth of knowledge and lived experience of the fisheries. We have our truth. Ask us why and how we care for the life that is supported by our oceans.
