'The importance of trade unions in advocating for workers’ rights cannot be overstated' ✍ DavidLinden

ON Monday, I was very proud to attend the annual gathering of the Scottish Trade Union Congress in Dundee alongside my friend and colleague, Mhairi Black MP.

No-one likes striking, not least the workers who lose their pay for doing so. Striking is not cost-free for anyone. The important thing to remember is that withdrawing labour is very much a last resort and not something people do so lightly. However, above all else, it is a fundamental human right and one we should seek to protect in the face of an attack from this morally bankrupt Conservative Government.

One of the most important achievements of trade unions in recent years has been the campaign for the introduction of the National Living Wage. Unions play an essential role in collective bargaining, negotiating agreements that benefit workers and employers alike. So Anas Sarwar needs to muster the courage to stand up to his Westminster bosses – it’s time for him to do the right thing for workers across Scotland by supporting the devolution of employment law.
