OTTAWA — The Liberal government’s independent adviser on foreign interference rejected a call from opposition parties to step down from his role, stating his marching orders come from the prime minister and that he will proceed with his work until his mandate is fulfilled.
The former governor general was named as the Trudeau government’s point-person on foreign interference in March, with a mandate to probe media reports that Beijing had interfered in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections. In response to those jabs, Trudeau on Wednesday lambasted the Conservative leader for playing “partisan games” and issuing “personal attacks” instead of “actually understanding the facts around foreign interference.”
For Johnston, that process will take the form of public hearings held later this year, and not a public inquiry, which he has ruled inappropriate due to the sensitivity of the intelligence at play. The New Democrats and the Conservatives, meanwhile, have each positioned themselves as the party best placed to hold the Liberals to account over their handling of the matter.
