With only two viable candidates left, let’s look at the presumptive front-runner first. In general, the closest the Pierre Poilievre campaign gets to actual policy statements are short platitudes posted to social media, such as “Stop #JustinFlation,” “Reclaim Canadian Values” and “Fire the Gatekeepers.”
In a health-care system that’s been overwhelmed by backlogs resulting from the pandemic and is plagued by decaying infrastructure, inadequate funding and human resource shortages, calling for “freedom” from vaccination may play to a populist base, but it does nothing to deal with the underlying issues affecting our hospitals.
A hospital bed is not a mattress and a set of linens. It’s a doctor, multiple nurses, along with laboratory and medical-imaging technicians. We don’t lack furniture in Canada, we lack trained professionals. Charest’s proposal is to streamline the entry of foreign-trained health professionals into the country and into the workforce.Article content
On the Canada Health Act, Charest not only dares to touch the third rail of Canadian politics, he grabs it with both hands. He proposes allowing the provinces to collaborate with the private sector, while maintaining a universal and public system. Charest also proposes decentralizing a number of services, including MRIs and outpatient surgeries, to publicly funded private centres. Throughout the pandemic, we saw how our exclusively hospital-centred care model resulted in a paralysis of outpatient services when our ICUs became overwhelmed.
