Housing minister denies suggestions he fired the B.C. Housing board over wrongdoing, saying it was to improve administrative oversight
“The changes in the board are not related to sort of wrongdoing,” he told Postmedia News on Thursday. “It’s just a change in direction and priority.”of most of the housing agency’s board came after a critical external review by Ernst & Young that found a lack of transparency around how B.C. Housing awards grants and insufficient records on the purchase of multi-million dollar properties.
Eby said the Kitsilano Coalition is looking for another excuse to “oppose this really necessary housing.” They’ve already cited the height of the building, the shadow it will cast and the number of supportive housing units as reasons the City of Vancouver should reject it, he said. The previous board, tapped by previous housing minister and now Finance Minister Selina Robinson, was still using processes which might have been acceptable when the housing agency’s budget was $782 million in 2017-18 under the previous B.C. Liberal government, Eby said.Article content
The board is overseeing the construction of thousands of rental units which means the government must be “100 per cent certain that there’s oversight and controls about how this happens,” Eby said. “We need to make sure that we have the firepower and the processes on our side to ensure that taxpayers are protected and affordable housing is being delivered.
